In what must surely be a first, a cyclist was kicked off the Tour de France yesterday for headbutting a rival in a dramatic sprint finish.
Australia’s Mark Renshaw was caught rutting at New Zealander Julian Dean in the final straight, paving the way for his British team-mate Mark Cavendish to win the stage.
Race director Jean-Francois Pescheux said of the incident: ”It’s cycling not fighting. Everyone could have ended on their backs.”
Australian Renshaw nutted Julian Dean twice in the shoulder after he boxed in other riders during a sprint finish.
